DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – Parents Just Don’t Understand (12”)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Kids today will now grow-up and see Will Smith as their favorite genie from Aladdin (job well done). Folks from my generation will always see him as the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, while “Jazz” was that cat trying to always get at Hilary Banks, @karynparsons 😍. But before all that – DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince were one of the dopest hip-hop duos in the game. @djjazzyjeffis one of the best producer/DJs to ever do it – while @willsmith has somehow become underrated as an MC, as time has moved on – but the dude has flows! Go back, grab the records, do your homework and appreciate the humble beginnings. #onceuponatime#djjazzyjeffandthefreshprince#parentsjustdontunderstand

Calling all B-Boys and B-Girls out there! We grabbed this soundtrack at @mxxnshine_records as recommended by record shop owner, and former B-Boy himself, Manny Mxxnshine. He was on our latest podcast episode waxin poetic about tracks like “99 1/2” by Carol Lynn Townes, “Reckless” by @icet, and “Ain’t Nobody” by @chakaikan – beware though, upon dropping this on your deck – you may feel the urge to grab some cardboard and bust out those windmills and flares! #breakin#bboys#bgirls#breakdancing#soundtracksaturday

by Sonny   ·  1 year ago

Sonny and Rick sit down with the owner of Mxxnshine Records, Mr. Manny Mxxnshine, to talk about his shop (in Whittier CA), his hustle, and his humble beginnings as an entrepreneur. They discuss what it’s like to own a brick-and-mortar record shop in 2019 and how to compete – and get real about what it takes to thrive and survive. Lastly, they jump into Manny’s DJ upbringing and get into all the jams that helped shape and influence his life and his shop.

by Sonny   ·  1 year ago

We’re back and live from East Los! And damn do we have an episode for you – we bring on our often mentioned, but never duplicated, Primo Tury on the podcast to talk some music, talk some shit, and re-live some childhood memories. We dive into Tury’s wild history of music-going experiences – including some of the wax he owns, his holy trinity of artists, and his undying love for The Wu. We had a blast with this one – 🤣😂

Rick & Sonny take a moment to go into reflection mode – as they take a deeper look within to find out where all the vinyl/music fandom and snobbery comes from and when they went “underground.” They take a stroll down memory lane to recall some early childfood memories and some of the tonterias they would get into.

Topics:

Amy Winehouse vs Sharon Jones, and the Dap Kings curse.

Rick’s soundtrack to his life

The moment we went “underground” and dug deeper in the crates.

Sonny’s fight night battle with Primo Johnny
